Starting July 15th, the City of Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department (AWD) will extend operations at its Eastside shelter to seven days a week. The shelter will now be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with pet viewing available from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This expansion aims to address the overpopulation challenges facing AWD’s shelters during the summer months.
Currently, AWD is caring for over 900 pets in its shelters, with an additional 600 pets in foster care. To alleviate this strain, the community is encouraged to support AWD through adoption, fostering, volunteering, and ensuring their pets are spayed or neutered.
In an ongoing commitment to accessible services and responsible pet ownership, AWD will offer free microchipping and pet tags until the end of July. Keeping microchip information up-to-date is crucial for reuniting lost pets with their owners.
Carolyn Ortega, Director of the Animal Welfare Department, expressed optimism about the expanded services: “This unprecedented move to seven-day operations aims to reduce shelter populations and find loving homes for our most vulnerable pets. There’s never been a better opportunity to adopt and make a difference in these animals’ lives.”
This initiative underscores AWD’s dedication to serving the community and ensuring the well-being of Albuquerque’s pets.
