NutriLeads and DSM-Firmenich have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at exploring the potential applications of Benicaros, a precision prebiotic, to enhance the gut and immune health of pets. Benicaros, derived from upcycled carrot pomace, has shown promise in multiple human studies for its ability to increase beneficial gut bacteria and support gut barrier function, immune health, and energy metabolism.
Pending results from ongoing microbiome studies in dogs and cats, the companies plan to enter into an exclusive global partnership to develop and market pet food products containing Benicaros. The prebiotic fiber, primarily composed of Bifidobacterium species, aims to boost the production of short-chain fatty acids essential for overall health.
“We see tremendous potential for Benicaros to optimize pet health and longevity by enhancing digestive and immune health,” said Joana Carneiro-Wakefield, Ph.D., CEO of NutriLeads. She highlighted previous research indicating that Benicaros could be a game-changing ingredient for both pet parents and manufacturers.
Pierre-Alain Ceralli, senior vice president of Petfood Business at DSM-Firmenich, emphasized Benicaros’ alignment with the industry trend toward healthier, science-based, and sustainable ingredients. He noted that the global pet food market’s growth is increasingly driven by consumer demand for such ingredients.
The ongoing animal studies are expected to conclude later this year, with results guiding the companies’ future endeavors in pet health innovation.
