Peninsula Manor in Marathon is rolling out a new initiative this summer aimed at enhancing the well-being of its residents through pet visits. Lorelle Sgro, the community services manager at Peninsula Manor, introduced the program as a pilot project designed to uplift the spirits of tenants.
“For a while, I’ve had the idea to bring in pets to brighten tenants’ spirits—something fun for them to enjoy,” said Sgro. “A few individuals were particularly struggling, so we wanted to try something different.”
While staff have previously brought their own pets for tenant enjoyment, this marks the first time the invitation has been extended to members of the public.
“Although we offer various activities, having friendly pets around provides a refreshing change,” Sgro noted. “Sometimes, human interaction isn’t enough. A furry friend can make a significant difference, which is why we reached out to the community.”
The response from local residents has been overwhelmingly positive, prompting Sgro to organize a schedule to ensure smooth operations. The visits will be divided into two types: open sessions in common areas for all tenants to participate in, and private, one-on-one visits tailored for those who prefer a quieter setting.
“We’re excited to offer both options. Everyone is eager to get started,” Sgro added.
Looking ahead, if the summer initiative proves successful, Sgro hopes to continue the program through the winter months, providing ongoing opportunities for tenants to connect with pets and each other.
