Have you ever seen someone else’s dog do something on command?
Like rolling over, ringing a bell, playing dead.
Have you ever thought: What a clever dog, if only my Teddy could be so good.
How do you train a teddy dog to roll?
Three steps to easy success!
Get ready to train and find the right training room.
The room should be comfortable and free of distractions. Once Teddy has learned to roll in a quiet room, he can be taken outdoors or in public for training.
Have a snack in hand.
Teddy is keen to please people, and with food in return, he will learn hard.
Use dog treats, tiger peanuts, ham, bacon or anything else your teddy likes.
Snacks should be prepared because it takes practice for Teddy to learn to roll.
Give the roll command and tell Teddy to lie down.
First let Teddy know how to lie down, teaching Teddy to lie down is the first step in teaching him to roll, because rolling starts from the lying down position.
The standard maneuver for lying down is to have the abdomen close to the ground, the forelimbs extended forward, and the head raised.
It’s easy to roll around in this position without hurting yourself.
Hold the food over its head and say “roll over” in a clear, friendly voice.
Draw an arc from the top of the head to the floor with the food so that Teddy’s head rotates with the food and then his body will follow.
This technique is a little difficult for Teddy. It takes practice.
The key to success is getting Teddy to associate the rolling motion with the verbal instruction.
If Teddy rolls successfully, he gets a reward, and even if Teddy rolls with your help, you have to reward him, and we have to pat him and say, “Good boy.”
Intensive training Keep training until Teddy doesn’t need your help.
After a few tries, Teddy can roll over on his own, so you don’t have to put food on his head.
Stand up and command your teddy to roll at the same time. If he can roll on his own, reward him.
Keep practicing until Teddy can do the roll for free.
Some very obedient Teddies will soon learn to roll over for nothing, and a pat on the head and a compliment will suffice.
Say some other commands, and finally say “roll” to give Teddy a cute show time.
Have your teddy practice in a high pressure environment. Once Teddy has learned to roll in the living room, take him outside. After outdoor activities, try reward training first, then no reward, and then training when someone is around.
