The States of Guernsey is considering new licensing requirements for dog walkers, pet sitters, and groomers as part of future proposals aimed at enhancing animal welfare. The Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure (E&I) is calling on animal care business owners to engage with the States Veterinary Officers to gather opinions on these potential changes.
Licensing, the committee states, would ensure animal welfare and boost consumer confidence in selecting reliable animal care services. Currently, businesses like pet shops, boarding kennels, riding stables, and farriers are already subject to licensing under the 2012 Animal Welfare (Guernsey) Ordinance.
Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, President of the Committee for E&I, emphasized that the licensing system is essential to maintaining high animal welfare standards. She noted that the system must evolve to reflect the growing range of animal-related enterprises on the island.
“We’re committed to phasing in any expansion of the licensing system, giving potential licensees ample time to prepare,” de Sausmarez added. She encouraged all stakeholders to participate in a forthcoming survey, stating that feedback would be crucial in shaping the final proposals.
